Hi Geoff,

Well, I have tried the new Tamron 20 to 70 and it is a nice lens, but not as
good as the Nikkor 20 to 70 which I do own, and it holds up quite well on
the D800/D4 cameras. The Tamrons in general do not focus as accurately or as
fast, but are good for their price point.

Gene

Don't jump to conclusions Mark. Have you actually shot the new stabilized
Tamron 24-70 on one of your Nikons? Did you notice I said I tried the best
Nikon 50 too?
I've only shot about 500 frames with the Tamron on my D7000. It behaves
quite well but of course the package on a dSLR is a lot bigger than
anything on my M9. I have only just replaced that camera with the D600. So I
was first interested in just checking the focus accuracy and speed of
operation for what I am trying to learn shooting wise right now.
Specifically I want to know what it does on my new camera at a moderate
aperture, 50mm and subject about 2 meters away. The other lens I tried on
this first play was the Nikon AF-S 50 1.4. I bought that with the D600.
You'll be annoyed to hear that my initial pixel peeping showed me that my
24-70 AF is right on the 0 gradation of my focus target and the 50 is
actually a bit out (20mm at 2m) and its focus operation is actually a little
slower. I am not seeing any quality differences at all in these specific
test shots as yet. In fact I think the Tamron has the edge currently due to
that focus error i need to resolve. But I need to calibrate the camera for
that and try again. Very early days yet of course. I have high hopes for
that Nikon 50 on the D600 or I wouldn't have bought them. Actually I got
them right now because some pixel peeping proved that my Summilux 50 ASPH
has gone out of adjustment and is away for recalibration. It was last done
in Solms in 2009. 5000 or so frames later, it is well out.

Even more heresy, I got one of the new Olympus EM-5 (OM D) cameras as well
;-)

cheers
Geoff
