Lew I never heard of this until I Googled after your post and found a
couple of old forum posts.  I think you mean the Tele Elmarit M not the
later Elmarit M  from 1990 onwards. That one itself was later discontinued
and replaced by the Summarit M 2.5. I actually have two of those (just
CLA'd).
I have no idea on how common this reported problem actually was with those
earlier lenses. Since production is reported to have finished in 1989 I
would have thought any such problem would be there or not by now? They
ought to be relatively cheap, if you could examine one you proposed to buy
and were satisfied, I doubt that there is much risk. You might want to
allow for that in how much you are prepared to pay of course?.
