Buy a NAS with gigabit Ethernet (and make sure your router is gigabit). USB 
competes for your CPU. Base 1000 is also faster than FW800 and allows you to 
move your backup drive to a different physical location and AC circuit.

I can usually do a full backup via Time Machine of 4tb in 24-48 hours. And 
that's using a Lacie Network Spacemax.

The big hangup in all configurations is that Time Machine takes as much 
thinking time for tiny files as it does for big ones.
