Hi Douglas,

I don't think the arrowheads are blunted. The archer gallops down the lane 
and shoots an arrow at each of four wooden diamond-shaped targets on poles. 
This archer hit and shattered his mark, hence it was deflected and bounced 
off the canvas behind where the target was.

Jolly good fun to watch! Yabusame Festival early May every year at Shimogawa 
Shrine, Kyoto, since the 1600s.
