Can't recall when I got my first one, must have been in the mid-80s ?

Yes, there was a time in my film days when they also had that  
(flat)iron to stamp the digits on paper. I bought my Contax with that  
in 1981 :-)
That was a real credit card then - I got some purchases I had made in  
India withdrawn from my account 6 to 8 months later ;-) I had even  
forgotten I had bought these things ...

The next move is the smart phone - all the banks here are now  
competing to sell phone subscriptions to their clients so that they  
may switch their systems to cellphone payment ...
