SOLUTION FOUND

I have just discovered that if, in LR presets on the left panel, I clcik 
'Zeroed' I get my colour image back. Clicking 'Colour' on the right develop 
panel did not work.

Hopefully problem solved, but why and how it happened is beyond me. Thanks 
everyone for your help.
