I had a similar problem with a local folder in T-Bird 
where I store all the files for translation I'm sent - 
it began to refuse files and slow Thunderbird down 
until I noticed I had almost 5 GB in it. I saved them 
all to another disk and then deleted them from 
Thunderbird - everything was faster after that.
