If I only suspect that HDR has been done conservatively, I generally like 
it, as it tends to mimic the huge dynamic range of live human vision.
If my first thought when seeing a photo is ?Wow! HDR!?, then I think it?s 
overcooked and not pleasing unless a certain ?look?, far away from the 
natural look of photography, is being sought deliberately for a specific 
application or reason.
This one falls into the latter category.
