My Wife's old 1.1 is now doing yeoman's duty to process office stuff. The
pre-2013/2014 Mac Pro still has the simplest drive expansion systems for
normal users.

AFAIK, Mac Pro 2013/2014 release has been pushed back again? For storage, I
would just use whatever internal storage expansion unit they have and then
a Drobo with 1.5x to 2x amount and just do constant backup.

The last Mac Pro (2009) is still pretty darn good, spec wise. You may want
to consider that. 3x 4TB drive and it should last you a couple years and
you still have one bay left :-)
