[Author Prev] [Author Next] [Thread Prev] [Thread Next] [Author Index] [Topic Index] [Home] [Search]The great dance bands, i.e. what is known as swing, dominated US music from the 1920s to the 1940s, when the full flowering of the Ellingtom, Basie, Goodman, Shaw and many more such bands took place. By the 1950s, the jazz scene had, under the primary influence of Parker, Guillespie, Mingus, Monk, etc moved on to "Bop" or "Bebop", complex stuff with shifting rhythms and beat, making it very tough music to dance to. By the 1960s jazz had moved to "Free Jazz", and Rock and Roll and Soul became the mainstay dance music, as it is till today. Only the very greatest Swing Bands survived this onslaught - in particular the Ellington and Basie bands. Even Goodman had to disband his band...
