This is just a snap, but of a major event: The aftermath of the massive
Mount St. Helens eruption in Spokane, WA. The shot shows "the morning
after." A cloud of volcanic ash traveled 300 miles across the state,
blotted out the sun, and dumped about one-quarter inch of gritty grey
powder the consistency of flour or confectioner's sugar on Spokane
during the afternoon of May 18. It had been pitch black from 3:00pm
until sunset. We woke up to this. People had already begun to hose
things off, but look at the alley behind me.
