USB3; it is theoretically 5gbps compared to 1gbps (gigabit LAN) on RJ45.

I think you need tiered storage if using multiple machines, your fast array 
direct attached to your main computer, this is automatically backed up to a 
NAS for general access...

... and the fastest direct connect is RJ45, USB3 or what? Even though you're 
directly connected to your work machine are other devices on your WAN able 
to share as NAS or via sharing on the local machine?
