I just checked the front page of the New York Times website and saw, count 'em, ONE picture taken by a staffer. The rest of them were from freelancers (when it says: Joe Blow for the New York Times) or wire services. In the case of my local paper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, many of the philly.com stories are illustrated by IStock/Getty images.
