Yes, you can. You can import from another catalogue, along with the raw
files, adjustments, rating, etc.

I consider the catalogue on my desktop (an 7-year old MacPro) to be the
"master" copy, and I periodically import images from the laptop, after the
initial work is completed on the laptop.

Lightroom is fundamentally designed as a single-user, single-machine
application, and I'd imagine it would take a lot of redesign to allow
manipulation of a catalogue from multiple machines (getting off SQLite
won't be fun) The application can't even manipulate multiple catalogues at
a time.
