This quote or this part of this quote:
"But really, art is a
private language for sophisticates to congratulate
themselves on their
superiority to the rest of the world. "
Is as offensive as anything I've seen on the subject. Probably more so.
It's nothing new for photo enthusiasts to be more into f stops and gadgets
then feeling comfortable with the artistic nature of their work of anyone
else's . So they sell their prints for a few bucks done by somebody else on
the internet and get a check at the end of the month. Everyone is happy and
no one has to call themselves or anyone else an artist. On ones going to be
accused of being pretentious.
The fact is that art sold in the context of brick and mortar art galleries
headed by art gallery owners who are much better at art, business and the
business of art than this. And they may have during the way or have gone to
school to learn something about the subject and then put it into practice.

The art world is constantly under attack by people who have made no effect
to understand it. But who just feel more comfortable feeling threatened by
it. Its often the same people who feel under the gun by poets and literary
types and the serious theater.
Its really just one of the main forms of anti intellectualism which runs
rampant in this country and may also have something to do with ideas of
"class" a thing not supposed to be going on in at least this country but
always is . Anyone with a favorite poet or an informed opinion not simply
based on dumb bias or with an open admiration for intelligence is suspect.
In Europe as I understand it you can read a book in a caf? an no one thinks
you are trying to prove a point.
