Subject: [Leica] Good experience with Drobo backup system

A few years ago, I bought a used Drobo with 4x 2TB drives for network
backup. The drives were a few years old already at that time, but the price
was good.

A year ago, one drive died. Drobo just gave some warnings that I should
replace it. I purchased a 4TB drive. Replaced it without even having to
power off and a day or two later after the Drobo did its magic, everything
is working fine again. No data loss, no down time.

Unfortunately, although that 4TB drive supposed to have a 3 year warranty,
it died! Then another of the older 2TB drive died and the system is
"critically low in storage". So I bought 2x 3TB drives, plugged them in,
and a couple days later, everything is again normal. Again no data loss, no
down time.

The only downside is that you only get ~60% of the storage, but this is
common with redundant storage.

I understand that RAID is great for enterprise, but for small business /
personal use, I can highly recommend Drobo. A few years, I used a RAID
something external drive for backup and either the controller or one of the
drives died and took the whole system down with it with no chance of
recovery. I understand that people more savvy with RAID tech can probably
figure out what's going on, but Drobo is painless. Well worth the cost, IMO.
