Not to be a nit-picker, but I believe Popeye said "I yam what I yam." Not
like it makes any difference.

I think there is a human nature thing when when is shooting at say iso 1600
which was my experience for years with Neopan 1600 and not worrying about
what life might be like at a stop or two or three faster than that. Which is
iso 3200, 6400 or 128,oo respectively. We are too busy making photographs to
worry about what life would be like with a different paradigm. "I am what I
am" said Popeye.
But when makes a jump faster it does open up some windows and doors and you
find yourself enabled and liberated unexpectedly. Like capturing action in
the dark and being able to stop down in the dark. More important once one
has been as has been my case been shooting regularly at iso 6400 going back
to 1600 again seems way bleak. We don't want to go back to what we once
were. And I even tried it when my back went out as my D40 is half the size
and weight of my D700. And I was pointing my camera at stuff with nothing
registering in the camera. It didn't know it was supposed to be taking a
picture. It thought it was turned off and had a lens cap on. I had to
convince it "hey that's a picture I got no problem last week with my D700
why don't you take a try at it?" "oh press the shutter release one more time
maybe it will go off" it said.

HCB its said did most of his key work with the fastest iso's he had at the
time which was iso or asa or whatever it was called 40. ASA 40 was the tri x
of the 30's and 40's. When Trix came out in 1955 they all said "we don't
need these new electronic flashes coming out now that we have iso 40o we can
shoot anything." But they learned they would want more, faster. And a bunch
of them pushed their films like crazy till the 1600 came out.

ISO 1600 is almost as good as 200 in a letter-size print, and 3200 is

TMax 400 in terms of grain. Even 5000/6400 is quite usable if you

mind moderate grain.
