We have a fuel chauffage, some dbl glazing and 50cm thick walls. There is a 
well in the garden, but that is across the Impasse from the house....

We're currently thinking of having a (reversible) air/air heat-exchanger 
installed - my in-laws have just had theirs for a couple of weeks and are 
pleased with it so far. So I'll be waiting a little longer to see it it is 
really efficient over a longer period. You might also consider that, unless 
you have a well in your garden, which would be even more efficient.
