The polarizing filter may be able to cut down the reflections off the paint.
Obviously easiest when used in combination with polarizers on the light 
sources as well;
as mentioned by Alan.

When attempting to make facsimile prints
Many, if not most, would consider highlights off the paint as unintended by 
the artist.
