Subject: [Leica] High resolution lens

 A report just came across my desk about a novel flat lens developed at 
Harvard University which promises a 30% higher resolution than the best 
conventional lens. The increase in resolution occurs because the lens is 
free of all of the aberrations which must be corrected for lenses based on 
spherical glass surfaces. The lens, made of carefully deposited filaments of 
titanium dioxide on a glass surface should be considerably cheaper than one 
made of carefully ground exotic glass elements because of the very low cost 
of the materials. This is akin to the revolution that occurred in telescope 
optics when coated mirrors replaced glass lenses. Apparently the first 
application will be in microscope optics and cell phone cameras but there is 
no limit to the size that the new lenses can be made. Does anyone have 
information on this?
