Hi Jim,
In number #1 it looks like it has been in a pretty heavy duty fire fight 
aerial battles with the wing edges shot off? The other one sort of looks not 
too bad.

The last of the butterflies are straggling through these days, some 
doing so because of handicaps.  This Great Spangled Fritillary has lost 
a lot of wing area in its travels, but carries on.  Here is a top view:
