Scott, I am struggling with the same thing.  I have
some shots that have heavy detail in the shadow that
gets turned to noise when printed (shows up fine on
the scan).  I know you got a good answer from Doug on
using curves and levels, and interpreting
histograms...all critical.  Thought I would pass on
one very analog comment...PAPER...

I was pulling my hair out trying to get a decent print
from one of my shots...couldn't be done. I was using
pretty standard Hahnamule Photo Rag paper....Just to
try a test I switched to a much smoother Cone
PhotoMatte paper and while still not quite as good as
I want, it went about 80% of the way there....much
more detail, noise is much more subtle. If you are
having trouble with a specific image, change paper
type and you will often get a VERY different print.
