Be careful. I work as an EMT and when it gets cold, we start getting hypothermia calls. I'd say 80% of them are alcohol-related. Alcohol lowers your core temperature - you just feel warmer because it brings blood to the skin (and away from your internal organs). If you're going to be outside shooting for extended periods of time, alcohol isn't the best idea. I don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but I don't want to see unconscious, scotch-toting leicaphiles (especially in photo-kilts) on my next shift. :-) - --Dan PS- Consider the above null and void for skiing and tailgate parties. :-) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Hemenway" <jim@hemenway.com> To: <leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us> Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 3:46 PM Subject: Re: [Leica] OT: Winter outdoors clothing for photography > Phong: > > I had thought that you had been in my neighborhood for years... are you > a New England newbie just this year? > > Whomever has told you that it's as cold here as Minnesota was being a > bit disingenuous. > > We occasionally get some 5 degree days and nights in December but the > rest of the winter is usually between 20-30++ degrees during the day. > > My son, (21) has one of those extra warm winter parkas, aka "pahk-ah" > and never uses it, just goes out in a lined leather jacket. > > I get by pretty well with a pair of thinsulate gloves, a pair of LL Bean > type boots when it's wet, and an irish sweater with a light jacket or > just a ski jacket. > > That and a "drop of the creature" and you'll be plenty warm. > > Some say that alcohol only makes you feel warm(er) but then I ask, "if > that's the case, what's the difference." > > -- > Jim - http://www.hemenway.com > > > > > on 11/21/02 12:33 PM, Phong at phongdoan@mindspring.com wrote: > > > > > I just realize how woefully ill-prepared I am to deal with the outdoors in the > > > wintertime at this latitude (Boston), and would greatly appreciate tips and > > > advices on winter clothing, and other photographic matters.
