Using these two images as examples because they show the most difference: Unprocessed http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2104452 Processed http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2104453 The filter appears to work by lightening the underexposed areas in the highlights, which makes sense because, like film, if there is no information present, there is nothing to enhance. On my monitor, the processed image seems to show more underexposure artifacts. If this were film, I would give the unprocessed image about three stops more exposure, which would clear up most of the noise. It's maybe not technically correct to call it noise on film, but we are not really talking about normal grain, but grain due to underexposure. The fix would be to add exposure. I think in many cases the problem would be that the meter could not take into account reciprocity failure. With digital, could noise be helped by giving more exposure so that effectively the scene is being less underexposed?
