Simon,
With the sutofocus turned off the lag of the II is in the range as a
middle range electronic SLR, say 65-80 ms. Turn off the auto exposure
and it responds in the M range, quicker than you can blink.

With autofocus turned on, shutter lag will be between 65ms and two
seconds depending on light conditions, contrast in the target, and the
usual suspects. No different than any autofocus camera except the upper
end F5, EOS 1V.

The lag time is the major frustration for my friends who have digital
cameras.
A lot buy the latest models cheaply somewhere in the middle or far east
wherever prices are lowest and sell them here in Europe when the models
arrive. So they can buy a new one again with even a little profit.
Especially the young parents often comment how they miss opportunities
for
kid,s shots because of the shutter lag.
Will the digilux 2 do a lot better in that respect?
