Subject: [Leica] Leica/Digital - heresy?

I think that to be 'fair,' Scott, you should go look at the
top-of-the-line Nikon DSLR or the Canon EOS MarkII, Oly E-1 - and see
how you feel about those. Keep in mind that while the D70 can produce
excellent images, it's the DSLR entry point for Nikon.

Exactly. It's weird. You get an SLR, and you
just expect a certain view. I stuck a 35/2 on it
and took a peak around, took a few snaps. It
looked odd, but I figured that was just the crop
factor.

So today, I put a 50/1.8 on my FM3a to do
a quick comparison, and then it became obvious
to me. The D70 image is really tiny by comparison.
Darker as well, but it was the VF image size that
really struck me.

Pretty disappointing. Now, I love my little Rollei
AFM35 P&S, and even my Oly Epic. And both of
these have a really squinty VF. Sure, they're nice
little P&S cameras.

But it was kind of a disappointing "cognitive dissonance"
to see such a small VF image in the D70. Just didn't
match up with my expectations of an SLR VF, I guess
(even a rather low end SLR).

Anyway, it is what it is. I don't want to dis it. I read everywhere that
for the price, it's a pretty good performer
- other than the VF :-) So I imagine I'll adapt and come
to appreciate its finer features.

It's plastic but I got Ritz's "you drop it, we'll fix it" warranty.
They've made good on this - very good - for me on another camera in the
past - no shipping or shipping charges, no questions asked. Just
brought it into the store, and the returned repair sheet showed a very
thorough check and overhaul I didn't even expect.

So I'm not too worried about its build for my own
toying around purposes.

I wonder if the D1X and D2H have nicer "real"
viewfinders?
