All of mine (metal, 70'ies vintage) look like a herd of elephants have trampled over them. They're metal, so I just pound them back out. The 35mm shade can no longer work as a series 7 filter holder though. The threads are all bound tight from the slightly off-round shape. I wouldn't send it off anywhere. Just take some pictures and if they turn out right, then it's alright. Handle your wife gently. Impress her by showing your aloofness to material things. You'll probably have a lot more joy from her through the years than a camera. My wife just spilled a cup of coffee over my 35mm lens on the kitchen table about 30 minutes ago. "Ah, don't worry. It works as well as my Summicron from the 70'ies, but it's only a $22 Jupiter-12." Wiped it off, no problems.
