On this list we talk a lot about photography as hardware. And, given that you can't do photography without hardware that's understandable enough. But, I try to think of photography as a process, and an involved one at that. It involves the physical world, equipment, your experience and vision, dark room or light room work, printing, and often matting, framing, and display, and people. I think that to be a photographer you have to be able control, use, and manage all of these things. A slip up anywhere along the way can ruin a photograph. In my opinion just being a master printer, which I am not, is a major achievement. If I remember correctly HCB didn't do his own dark room work. To some extent I think that HCB got the results that he got because of the people who did his printing. Put another way, it pays to give the people who are holding the ladder for you a bit of credit.
