Y'all -

So I was in New York again playing guitar on a recording and I swore I
wasn't gonna snap on the session (music too complicated, requiring what
mental powers I can still access to deal with all the Little Black
Dots.)

However, when my parts were done the artist asked if I would come in
the next day to help with the recording of the saxophone parts. Long
story short, none of the mics were sounding good so I leaned on the
engineer to dig around for anything we hadn't tried. He found this old
Neumann (an M7, I believe, maybe from the '30's or 40's) which turned
out to be the clear winner. The sax player thought that the mic was
such a significant part of the sound that he wanted a shot taken with
it for the CD (Canon 20D w/50mm 1.8 Canon):

This version seems to over-emphasize the mic, but the art director and
the artist like it, so it will be... I do like the rendering quality in
general.
