For our visit of several days we had absolutely no problems either . Nor did we ever feel remotely threatened anywhere we went. I'm pleased to hear another voice suggesting that Barcelona needs only sensible precautions like everywhere. I can think of several countries where I would not be comfortable at all, of course. Also, to give a little perspective, having your bag or wallet stolen must be horrible, getting assaulted or threatened with weapons would be far worse. No muggers with guns or knives in Barcelona that I heard of. No-one proposing to murder you to finance a drug purchase or kidnap you for ransom or a political statement either, as far as I know.
