Boston has a subway/tram system that is essentially a set of spokes with no wheel. So rather than have a vaguely direct 2.2 miles, my T commute was a V - from my home, into the heart of downtown, and then back out on another line to Harvard Square. Walking would be quicker, of course, but it would require physical exertion.
