mmm, yes, and no. There it wasn't the same availability, but the main  
reason was circulating money, thus the availability of cash to buy a  
better camera or lenses (he was always complaining about leaks and all  
that) for someone who was always struggling to pay the rent was quite  
limited back in the 30's and 40's.
