Shortly after we got back I got a high fever interspersed with chills, severe muscle aches and a tight, constricting cough. After about 5 days of this the cough eased up a bit and I got pneumonia. The fever was severe for 3 days, but it took 10 days for it to be gone. After 2 1/2 weeks the pneumonia was gone, but I still have a lingering cough and can't breathe completely clearly. No stuffiness nor stomach issues at any time. We were on the West Coast in the area of Puerto Vallarta, but many cases have now been diagnosed there. I didn't die from it (I don't think there is e-mail from the other side :-)) but it was the sickest I've been in decades. It seems pretty clear that this thing started a while ago, and I have since heard from a number of people that have had identical symptoms going back a number of months. Whether this is the 'swine flu', a precursor in a developmental stage or something else is hard to tell at this stage, but it's also something that will be impossible to contain. The masks, and the way they are deployed in Mexico are ludicrous and with international travel and incubation periods every country will be exposed no matter what we do. Travel restrictions might delay things a little in certain countries, but hurt economies immensely without actually preventing anything. The best we can do is to get some of the anti-virals ready and have them in stock when people need them, for people in all countries. That is certainly a problem as that cost is too much for individuals in many countries, and governments in the wealthier countries have a proven track record of not wanting to help poorer countries even when the costs aren't that high.
