It certainly gives you a quick dose of magnification if that is what you are looking for. I recommend you to use as fast a 50mm as you can get hold of, to minimise the risk (IME) of possibly severe vignetting. I make no claims for the quality of the results by comparison with a specialist macro lens - all depends on the detailed application you have in mind. I recommend you try to get hold of John Shaw's tome "Closeups in nature" which is as good as they get (and covers this particular technique) - there are several listed on www.abebooks.co.uk for around ?10, although all are from USA.
