I used to think the same thing (I lived/walked through the pine woods of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina growing up). Last year I got poison oak on my arm; mild thankfully. My dermatologist said the next encounter would be much more severe. Don't go rolling in it!! The leaves look the same as those of Poison Ivy, but the entire plant can have configurations ranging from a bit of ivy to a small tree. I think I have partial immunity to it because I used to ride horseback a lot, and often rode through poison oak patches, but never got affected despite much brushing down the horse after the ride. However, once I found a rash on my chest and took it to a dermatologist. He said: "It's a contact dermatitis. I don't know what it is, but if you asked me to make a guess, I'd say poison oak. Some people are turned into basket cases by it.
