tripod, use slow film, and stop the lens down to maximize the quality
of the lens if I lose the photograph in the process."

Apart from mechanical going out the window when Leicas became digital,
this all still stands.  An M9 is still the handiest, most directly
controllable, compact, full-frame digital camera you can get.  And as
much as I like their lenses, I like the cameras better too.
