Protocol is to remove the magazine, eject any round and lock the slide back. The pistol is then handed butt first, with the muzzle pointed straight down. The magazine is not reinserted. The idea is that the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction (true at all times, loaded or unloaded), and the person taking it can see that the magazine well is empty and the chamber is empty. This is true of all firearms - action open so an empty chamber can be verified, magazine or ammunition removed, muzzle always pointed in a safe direction. As a radical alternative, there are no doubt some places where passing a gun around the dinner table is viewed as a breach of etiquette :). Whenever I picked up an "unloaded" pistol, even if I had unloaded it minutes before, I would check that it was still unloaded.
