Certainly the internet suggests that the 1.4 is the sharpest extender. OTOH - for flying birds perhaps the reach of the 80 - 400 by itself should be about enough. Thanks BTW for your tip about placing focusing with the focus button - away from the shutter button. Obviously - as you can see (and already know) it works!
