The 2x requires you to stop down at least one stop to get the most out of it. When I use it with my 400/2.8 I stop it down 1 to 2 stops and then it is OK, but the dof is VERY narrow though. I really like the 1.4x converter though, it has almost no effect on picture quality and AF speed, unlike the 2.0x which does effect the AF speed a bit.. 400 is very good for many tree shots, and some flight shots if you can get close enough, which I suspect you can up there. Certainly the internet suggests that the 1.4 is the sharpest extender. OTOH - for flying birds perhaps the reach of the 80 - 400 by itself should be about enough. Thanks BTW for your tip about placing focusing with the focus button - away from the shutter button. Obviously - as you can see (and already know) it works! My choice is this one: http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Howard+Cummer/Hummers2014/8518.jpg.html Now, if only you had got the full wingspan on the last one.... I think you might do better with the 1.4x and a spot of cropping, the D800E has a host of pixels to spare...(-: Cheers Jayanand _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
