The digital back is, unlike film, completely flat (no camera I know holds the film completely flat) and has no dimensionality (unlike film emulsion which is layered). So critical focus is not possible with the GG; you can get close. With Alpa you put a mount on your digital back to mount it to the camera frame. Alpa provides shims in increments of 0.01mm and there is a methodology to calibrate your specific back and your specific Alpa mount to within 0.01mm. Amazingly, there is a difference! The back does have a retina equivalent display, but it is small and difficult to move around. Also, it only displays the jpeg. So that is what I used to do before: frame and get close with the GG, snap, review the image with a 10X loupe under a dark cloth on the backs small display (you can enlarge, move around, etc., but it's slow). Adjust and shoot again until satisfied. Having a 12" retina equivalent display is revolutionary!
