I don't own an R, but a couple of years ago I went to one of those
"clean & check" deals Leica USA often take on the road to their dealers.
Mike Sonneberg, manager of their Service Department, did some basic
diagnostic tests (shutter speeds, exposure metering, etc.) and took care of
some simple repairs. I remember all the people in line in front of me had
Rs, and when Mike popped open their cameras for inspection, he routinely
replaced those black foam rubber rectangles around the film ID window,
without even being asked. From his comments, I gathered that the material
they originally chose for the light gaskets fell a bit short of the mark.
Hence the minimal hassles in getting the "upgraded" gaskets from Leica USA.
(Can't say I've ever seen the utility of those film windows to begin with.)
