If one were considering an M series, and couldn't afford an M6, what's 
the next best M series to look for to actually use? M4, M-2, M4-P or 
earlier (don't want an M5)?

Are there any (other than the MDa) that one should actively avoid?

What bright line finders are in the various M models?
