Well, both the five-element and four-element versions of the Tele-Elmarit
- -- and the four-element Elmarit -- lack glued elements, so I suspect your
acquaintance is another one of those mythopoetic sorts who tend to
congregate at camera shows.

The five-element Elmarit DID have two glued elements, but I certainly have
never heard a tale of 'bad glue joints'.
