<<I got curious about the M2S which is the pre-model of M2R. Is it
identical to the M2R except the marking? I know 2,000 of the M2R were
     made. How about the M2S?
     Thanks,

Lee:

According to the Leica Pocket Book, "1966 US Army Issue designated M2S have M4
three prong rapid load system, later sold by E. Leitz Rockleigh, USA designated
M2R, from 1969 - 1970 numbers 1248201 - 1250200."

Hope this helps. I'm sure others have even more complete information.
