Subject: Tiltall Tripods

I own several Tiltall tripods. I purchased my first one in the mid-70's.
I understand that two brothers in New York City who owned a small machine
shop invented them. They were looking for work right after World War II
and manufacturing tripods seemed like a good business to go into. They
started selling their hand-made tripods door-to-door. The word soon got
around to professional photographers about their quality and their small
business was soon established. The brothers retired in the early 70's and
sold out to Leitz USA who simply placed their label on them and continued
their manufacture. Leitz later sold the product to another company, whose
name I cannot recall. I bought my last Tiltall tripod about five years
ago, but have not checked lately to see if they are still available. I just
looked at its label to see who makes them now, but its paint is too worn to
read.

The tripods are of simple design, but superb in quality and reliability.
I have never had any problems with them. In the research laboratory where
I work, we use a variety of tripods, all Tiltall, to support scientific
instruments. Tripods do not rock. Obviously this specification of tripods
came from me. Since I purchased my first Tiltall tripod I have never
considered any other brands.
