You must talk to people, let them see what you're doing, let them see your
camera.  If your shooting in a "rough" area of town, cover the shiny parts of
your camera with gaffers tape.  You must try to be as commonplace as a street
vendor or sombody waiting for a taxi.  Don't be sneaky, "strangers" find that
to be unsettling at least.  

Those who use M cameras are using a camera that looks inexpensive, or so I've
been told.

Streetshooters have the luxuary of carrying a minimal amount of equipment.  A
jacket with a couple of big pockets is all you really need. Plus, those who
use M-6's don't need to carry a meter.

Keep it simple.
