Your 271xxx Leica undoubtedly is also a Leica IIIb. The IIIb differs from the
IIIa in that the IIIa viewfinder and rangefinder eyepieces are about 20mm
(about 0.8 inch) apart, whereas in the IIIb they are separated by only a 1mm
bright metal spacer. At  least that is the way they are on mine. The two
eyepieces are "D" shaped, with the rangerfinder eyepiece being a reversed "D".

You should be able to find the serial number on the lens engraved around the
holder of the front lens element -- the same place that the lens name -- Leitz
Elmar, F number, etc. Look at the front of the lens.
