'Second that, and it was something which crossed my mind yesterday at the   
HCB exhibition I visited.
The pictures were gripping but the sharpness wasn't what made them so.
OK, we're privileged to use the sharpest lenses in 35mm technique but the   
end result is whether the picture succeeds, either to ourselves or   
others. The picture can succeed irrespective of the technical perfection   
of the lens.
The concept of a subjective review of lenses, rather akin to the   
subjective reviews of hi-fi gear, is intriguing, to me at any rate.

Alf, this is a great point - a consideration that one sometimes forgets.   
 I
must confess that I am generally oriented toward the numbers.  It is good   
to
be reminded that the emotional view is important. In fact, I would say   
that
the emotional side is more important in the event that it conflicts with   
the
more scientific side of things.  What really counts is satisfaction with   
the
photographs and the process.  It is certainly true that a certain   
personality
of  a lens may contribute to the feel that one is looking for.
