I am a pro and do mostly studio work with large format, all of our exposures
are done with an incident meter, fine tuned with Polaroid and bracketed. But
I almost never take my meter outside. Just point your camera at the inside of
your hand and open up a stop (depending on your hand) making sure that you
hand is receiving the same light as your subject. Everything that you can do
with an incident meter can be done with your hand and you have one less thing
to break, buy batteries for and worry about, plus you can still use the
reflective meter for calculating highlight and shadow ranges.
I have actually calibrated my hand by using a spot meter -- reading of a gray
card and then my hand finding the difference (it's . 8 stops). Or you can
spend $500 + for a nice meter.
