You make a very interesting point about alienation.  I believe, however,
that Leica is relatively up-front about the relative performance of
their lenses; one just has to learn to read their comments.  Leica will
refer to the performance (contrast, resolution) of some lenses as "good"
others as "very good" and the 180/2.8 APO as "excellent".  They are
distinguishing among the lenses.  A lens Leica calls "good" is not as
good as a lens they call "very good" or "excellent", although it is
still good.
